Privileges Committee to meet next week over Kennedy Agyapong ‘useless’ comment

Parliament’s Privileges Committee is expected to meet on Tuesday to hear a petition to investigate some alleged unsavoury comments made by Assin Central legislator, Kennedy Agyapong.

The parliamentarian launched a scathing attack on investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas following revelations in his latest piece ‘When Corruption and Greed Become the Norm’, popularly known as #Number 12.

The documentary exposed alleged corruption among top Ghana Football Association officials, including referees.

But Mr Agyapong who was unimpressed with the work questioned Anas’ method of investigation is wrong because he lures his victims into a trap.

He also accused Anas of being corrupt vowing to unmask Anas and went ahead to even share some photos of a man he claimed is the undercover journalist.

It was during one of his rants during a television programme that he described Parliament as ‘useless’ for electing Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu as Majority leader.

The Majority Leader had reportedly criticised Mr Agyapong's antics prior to the premiere of the documentary.

This outraged, Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak raised the issue on the floor of the House, after which the Speaker directed the Committee to look into it.

Joy News’ Joseph Opoku Gakpo reported that the Committee will sit to discuss the matter on Tuesday.

Mr Mubarak has also been asked to come and justify why he is asking Parliament to investigate the Assin Central MP.

He told Joseph, he is prepared to submit his evidence before the Committee.

“I have already presented all the evidence I have…the video and publications from several media houses and I’m hopeful that on Tuesday I will appear before the Committee to justify why I thought he should be brought before the Committee,” he said.

Mr Mubarak explained that the reason he reported the issue to Parliament is to ensure that members behave as is expected of them, whether or not they’re on the Floor.

He said if Mr Agyapong is remorseful and apologises, he will be let off but, “if he appears and is going to flex there then obviously, we will go the full haul.

“You can speak to the issues with all the passion but the insults that follow is our worry,” he added.
